Good morning, Waltham,

We have officially made it to Issue 6. Marathon weekend is here and the whole city of Waltham is buzzing. Thank you for continuing to read and share this newsletter every single week.

But first, a quick retraction. Last week I called Carl's the undisputed king of the steak and cheese. My inbox and the local community immediately let me know I was living in 2015. Between the recent price hikes and the fierce debate over Lena's on Main Street versus the Market Basket deli counter, I stand corrected. Thank you for keeping me honest.

This week we are covering a breakfast spot that has gained national attention for a very good reason.

Let's get into it.

🍽️ THIS WEEK'S EAT

In a Pickle, 265 Moody Street

If you live in Waltham and have never been to In a Pickle, you are missing out on a true local spectacle. This is not your average quiet diner. They are famous for serving absolutely massive, over the top breakfast creations.

Their menu features things like Snickers pancakes, Oreo stuffed French toast, and breakfast sandwiches the size of your head. The Food Network actually came to Waltham just to feature them on national television. Because of the hype, it gets insanely busy and crowded on Saturday and Sunday mornings. You will absolutely want to join their online waitlist before you leave your house, or go on a weekday if you want to avoid the chaos.

📍 265 Moody St | Open daily for breakfast and lunch

📅 3 THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND

  1. Spring Walks at Beaver Brook Reservation

All weekend near the intersection of Mill Street and Trapelo Road. The spring weather is finally holding steady. Beaver Brook offers 59 acres of open fields, ponds, and paved walkways. It is the perfect place to get outside and enjoy the sunshine without leaving the city.

  2. Secure Tickets for the Gore Place Sheep Shearing Festival

This is not happening this weekend, but the famous annual festival is next Saturday. It draws thousands of people to Waltham every year for historic demonstrations, live music, and actual sheep shearing. Tickets always sell fast once the weather gets warm, so grab them today.

  3. Marathon Monday at Shoppers Cafe

Monday April 20 at 731 Moody Street. Waltham is not on the official marathon route, but the energy still spills over. Shoppers Cafe is the premier local spot to grab a table, order some pub food, and watch the runners cross the finish line on the big screens.

🛍️ LOCAL FIND

The Rose Art Museum, 415 South Street

Located right on the campus of Brandeis University sits one of the finest collections of modern and contemporary art in New England. Most residents think it is only for students, but it is completely free and open to the public.

They house incredible works by artists like Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. Right outside the entrance, you will find the Light of Reason installation. It is a stunning arrangement of vintage streetlights that you have probably seen pictures of before. You can spend an hour here and feel like you went to a world class museum in New York.

📍 415 South St | Open Wednesday through Sunday

💬 ONE GOOD THING

Waltham literally standardized time for the entire country. In 1891, two trains collided in Ohio because a conductor had a pocket watch that was running just four minutes late. Following the tragedy, the government created strict new standards for railroad timepieces. The Waltham Watch Company stepped up and produced the first mass manufactured watches that could pass these rigorous safety tests. For decades, if you rode a train anywhere in America, your safety depended on a watch built right here on Moody Street.
