Good morning, Waltham,

Welcome to Issue 11. Memorial Day weekend is officially here, and summer is right around the corner. Thank you again to everyone who played our first trivia challenge last week. The inbox was completely flooded with answers.

This week we are giving a shoutout to our trivia champion, highlighting a fantastic Moody Street brunch spot, and preparing for the long holiday weekend.

Let's get into it.

🏆 THE TRIVIA WINNER

Last week we launched our very first local trivia challenge, and the response was incredible. A huge congratulations to Joshua Hardester, who was the very first person in the inbox at 8:05 am to correctly identify Stonehurst at the Robert Treat Paine Estate as the Olmsted designed landscape. We will absolutely be doing more of these, so keep brushing up on your local history.

🍽️ THIS WEEK'S EAT

Bistro 781, 336 Moody Street

Our trivia winner actually inspired this week's food feature. Josh mentioned he was admiring the Stonehurst grounds during a recent brunch at Bistro 781. Located right in the heart of Restaurant Row, this spot is famous for its scratch made elevated pub food and incredible weekend brunch. If you are looking for an exceptional place to grab eggs benedict and a mimosa this long weekend, this is exactly where you want to be.

📅 3 THINGS TO DO THIS WEEKEND

  1. Kick Off Summer at Prospect Hill Park

All weekend long at 314 Totten Pond Road. Since it is Memorial Day weekend, it is the perfect time to head up to Prospect Hill. It is the highest point in Waltham and offers completely unobstructed, sweeping views of the Boston skyline. Pack a lunch and hit the trails.

  2. Explore the Rose Art Museum

Saturday May 23 and Sunday May 24. Located right on the Brandeis University campus at 415 South Street. This is one of the premier modern and contemporary art museums in the entire region, and admission is completely free for everyone.

  3. Spring Mansion Tours at Gore Place

Friday May 22 and Saturday May 23. Head over to 52 Gore Street to tour the historic 1806 mansion. It is a stunning look at early nineteenth century architecture and life. The fifty acre grounds are also open and beautiful to walk through this time of year.

🛍️ LOCAL FIND

Beaver Brook Reservation

Located at 621 Trapelo Road, this state park sits right on the Waltham and Belmont line. It is a massive green space featuring a beautiful cascading waterfall, mature forests, and historic mill remnants. It is heavily shaded and incredibly peaceful, making it a great alternative to the busier downtown parks this holiday weekend.

💬 ONE GOOD THING

We talked about the first American factory and the microwave oven, but we have to mention the watch that made Waltham famous. During the Civil War, the Waltham Watch Company produced the William Ellery model. It was specifically designed to be affordable and reliable for soldiers. It became so incredibly popular that President Abraham Lincoln actually purchased and carried one of these Waltham made watches himself.
